About the lexicon
The Sorbian Biographical Lexicon is a project of the Sorbian Institute. It brings together the Institute’s biographical research and builds on earlier Sorbian biographical reference works, including the Nowy biografiski słownik published in 1984.
The lexicon includes deceased people from different walks of life whose lives and work are significant for Sorbian history and culture. It brings together profiles and scholarly biographies with historical accounts and references to further sources. This also allows readers to trace changes in how a person has been portrayed and assessed over time.
Basic biographical information is provided in German, Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian. The lexicon serves research, teaching, schools and the interested public. It is continually expanded and updated in the light of new research.
