Living Cultural Heritage

Camprowanje

Camprowanje is a traditional procession where costumed groups go from house to house accompanied by musicians. These groups can be youth, married men, married women, and nowadays mixed groups or children. Historical records document specific traditional costumes for the participants, including the Pea-Straw Bear (słomjany mjadwjeź), the Stork, the White Horse Rider, the Double- Human (stary młodego njaso), and the Egg-Wife. The latter is typically a man dressed in female attire who carries an egg basket. In modern times, these traditional costumes have been joined by clowns, animals, and various other costumes. After dancing with the mistress of the house and a glass of schnapps, the participants receive eggs and money for the Eieressen (literally egg eating), the celebratory dance evening hosted by the respective Camprowanje group.

This is living cultural heritage that is characterised by its dynamism. This means that it changes, adapts and evolves in its practice and transmission over generations. This is how it is passed on and remains alive.
